Our family has been dealt a blow too heavy to bear, twice. Our beloved pet cats were victims of hit-and-run incidents. Twice we had to navigate the pain of loss, and twice we found ourselves asking: why isn't there a legal requirement to report the unfortunate demise of a cat, as it is with dogs and larger animals? Our cats were pivotal to our daily lives, comforted us in silence, and helped us with mental health. There was no distinction between them and our dog, so why does the law discriminate?

In many jurisdictions, hitting a dog or a large animal with a vehicle and not reporting it is considered a crime, while omitting such actions in relation to smaller domestic animals like cats carries no legal repercussions. This is a glaring gap in our legal structure that needs to be addressed. To deny this is to negate the pivotal role cats play in many households as therapy and companion
