Make raccoon the official mascot of Simon Fraser University

Make raccoon the official mascot of Simon Fraser University
The Issue
Raccoons are iconic and the most recognisable animals on SFU campus. As a student, I see raccoons almost every day, and I know that I'm not alone. Many students share this experience, making raccoons a part of our everyday life and identity here at Simon Fraser University. They are practically an unofficial university animal already, and it's time we make this recognition official by adopting the raccoon as the university's mascot.
The current mascot, Red Leafs, while beloved in its way, lacks the uniqueness and relatability that raccoons bring. SFU is known far and wide for its raccoons; they are a key aspect of our university's identity and charm. Every time a new student or visitor sees a raccoon on campus, it sparks joy and a sense of belonging. An official raccoon mascot will not only unite us but also enhance our university's branding potential.
Consider how a raccoon mascot can enhance student engagement and build a stronger campus community. Raccoons are curious, intelligent, and adaptable creatures—qualities that resonate deeply with the spirit of SFU students. As symbols of perseverance and resourcefulness, they represent the very essence of what it means to be part of SFU.
Moreover, making the raccoon our official mascot can extend beyond just branding. It offers the opportunity for unique merchandise, stronger alumni connections through shared experiences and symbols, and perhaps even new traditions that can become cherished parts of SFU culture.
It's time to celebrate and embrace the vibrant, playful spirit of raccoons as a representation of our beloved university. Let's make the change and rally around a symbol that truly represents who we are. Sign this petition to make the raccoon the official mascot of Simon Fraser University!
