Make rabies treatment affordable for all in North Carolina
Make rabies treatment affordable for all in North Carolina
The Issue
Imagine being bitten by an animal and fearing not only for your life but your financial stability. Sadly, this is the harsh reality for many residents in North Carolina, including me, who may face the financial burden of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) treatment. In a state where the inability to pay is already recognized as a significant barrier, it is crucial to expand protections and ensure no eligible resident has to face the impossible choice between life-saving treatment and financial ruin.
Rabies is a fatal disease if not treated promptly. Post-exposure prophylaxis involves a series of shots that must be administered soon after the potential exposure. However, the high costs of PEP, which can range from $3,000 to $7,000, make it inaccessible for many who do not have adequate insurance coverage or financial means.
Currently, North Carolina has certain provisions to assist individuals who are unable to pay for vaccination. But these protections are not comprehensive enough, leaving gaps where citizens, especially those with low income or without insurance, might experience delays or choose to forgo treatment due to its cost. This needs to change.
I urge the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) to implement an expanded statewide program that covers the full cost of rabies PEP for all residents effectively, regardless of their insurance status or income level. By allocating resources and forming partnerships with federal health services, we can ensure that no North Carolinian has to put their life at risk because they cannot afford necessary treatment.
Furthermore, raising public awareness about the availability and importance of immediate rabies treatment can help prevent unnecessary fatalities. Establishing educational programs and accessible information platforms across communities will help dispel fears and equip people with the knowledge they need to act swiftly.
Please join me in urging the North Carolina government to prioritize health over financial barriers by signing this petition. Together, we can make sure that every resident has the right to affordable, life-saving rabies treatment, further protecting the public from preventable disease. Sign now and help us save lives. #AffordablePEPforNC
