Hello all you lovely people - we need your help!
Please can you help us by writing to your MP asking them to support the campaign?
We have some very exciting news - and we also need your help. Today we were on Radio 4's Woman's Hour talking about our campaign - a big moment for us and made possible because of all you signing and supporting us.
It's not enough to talk about this between ourselves, we need politicians onboard so that we can make real action happen.
To email your MP, simply copy and paste the template below and then click here to email your MP. If you feel comfortable, please add your experiences or why you want street harassment to be made illegal - this will show why this issue is so important.
Once you have emailed your MP please let us know! You can write it as a comment on the petition or email us at ourstreetsnow@hotmail.com
Text to use when writing to your MP:
I believe that street harassment should be made illegal in the UK. As your constituent, I’m writing to ask that you join me in supporting the Our Streets Now campaign to make this a reality. Women should feel safe walking the streets, day and night, with the confidence that the law protects them. 90% of women in the UK are street harassed before reaching adulthood. France recently made street harassment a fineable offence, resulting in over 700 fines this year.
The sexist harassment of women and girls in public space has been normalised in our society. It defines the way women live their lives, restricting our sense of safety and resulting in both emotional and psychological harm. I want to live in a society in which everyone feels safe and free from harassment as they go about their everyday lives.
Making street harassment a criminal offence would empower victims of harassment to report incidents, and dissuade harassers. I also think that criminalising street harassment would make a powerful statement about the rejection of misogyny in our society.
The Our Streets Now campaign was started four months ago by two sisters, Gemma and Maya Tutton, who have both been victims of street harassment. It has attracted nationwide support from a coalition of allies including organisations like UN Women UK, celebrities such as Emma Watson and Jameela Jamil, criminal lawyers and experts in misogyny.
Will you sign the petition and publicly support their campaign to #StopStreetHarassment?
Please email ourstreetsnow@hotmail.com telling them you support them.
Thanks so so much,
Gemma and Maya Tutton
