The Issue

Life is already hard for many of us. We seek joy in the little things, yet some individuals exploit this by using automated means to purchase in-demand products or event tickets, only to sell them for inflated prices. This practice not only denies others the opportunity to enjoy these products at a fair price but also allows sellers to profit without contributing any real value to society. It also raises concerns about potential tax evasion, as these sales often go unreported.

The problem starts when high-demand products such as gaming consoles, newly released technology devices, or limited-edition trading card games hit the market. Automated bots scour online stores to buy up these items in bulk, leaving genuine consumers empty-handed. Once acquired, these products are listed on marketplaces for exorbitant prices—sometimes double or triple their Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

The current lack of regulation around this practice helps perpetuate an unfair marketplace. For instance, when a popular gaming console is released, countless consumers find themselves unable to purchase it at retail price due to scalpers. According to a report by NBC News, bots were responsible for almost half of online traffic while buying much-coveted items, making it near impossible for average buyers to compete.

To tackle this issue, we urge policymakers to pass legislation that makes it illegal to sell unopened, brand new products above their manufacturer-recommended retail price within one year of the product's release date. Implementing strict penalties for violators and empowering online platforms to monitor and enforce these rules will help ensure fair access for genuine consumers.

Countries like the United Kingdom have already taken steps in this direction by proposing legislation targeted at ticket reselling, and similar laws could be adapted for consumer goods. With the enforcement of these laws, we can strive toward a more equitable market, where everyone has a fair chance to purchase products at their intended price.

This is not just about financial fairness—it's about restoring the joy in finding and affording the products we love without encountering artificial hurdles. By signing this petition, we can send a strong message to lawmakers and push for concrete action against this unfair practice. Support fair pricing and protect consumer rights.
