Make post-DV support for children mandatory
The Issue
When my relationship ended, it wasn't just me who faced the aftermath of living in a Domestic Violence (DV) relationship, it was my children too. Watching them struggle with anxiety, fear, and emotional turmoil, it became painfully evident that the effects of such a traumatic environment didn't vanish with the departure of the abuser. I realized quickly that we had very few places to turn for structured support, leaving us to navigate these challenges mostly on our own.
Statistics from UNICEF reveal that millions of children worldwide are exposed to domestic violence each year, and yet the support systems available for them once the abusive environment is dismantled are shockingly inadequate. This gap in our social services system must be closed if we are to truly protect and nurture these young lives. Children require specialized psychological support to process their experiences and build healthy coping mechanisms—tools necessary to prevent the perpetuation of the cycle of violence into their adult lives.
I am calling on local governments and child welfare agencies to establish robust, mandatory support programs for children coming out of DV households. These programs should include access to trauma-informed counseling, peer support groups, and educational resources for both children and their custodial parents. It's imperative that funding be allocated to train more professionals in this field and to create community awareness campaigns around the needs of these children.
Moreover, these services should be accessible to all income levels, ensuring no child is denied the help they need solely due to financial constraints. Research, such as the studies conducted by the World Health Organization, consistently shows that early intervention and support can dramatically improve outcomes for children in these situations, leading to better mental health and academic performance.
By signing this petition, you are joining a movement to ensure that children who have survived the ordeal of domestic violence are not further victimized by having to face the lingering impacts alone. We must push for these necessary changes to ensure a safer, healthier future for all children. Stand with us by signing this petition to urge lawmakers and child welfare organizations to prioritize mandatory support interventions for children affected by domestic violence.Thank you.
