The Issue

In 2023, I had a termination of pregnancy, a decision I did not take lightly. Following the procedure at home, I woke to find the foetus had passed as a whole, unlike what I was informed by medical professionals. They had assured me it would be in the form of blood clots. This unexpected outcome left me grappling with severe psychological trauma.

In the weeks following, I experienced unusual heavy bleeding and an overwhelming sense of unwellness. Despite seeking help from my doctor, my condition worsened. Ten weeks later, I found myself in the hospital with a septic infection and an abscess in my fallopian tube, conditions that could have been life-threatening if left untreated. These complications have since led to ongoing pelvic inflammatory disease, affecting my quality of life significantly. I have also been informed that my fertility rate has declined as my left fallopian tube is clubbed.

This personal ordeal has highlighted a critical gap in post-abortion care. While the initial termination process has become more accessible with at-home medication, the follow-up care, essential for patient safety, seems to be overlooked. I believe that mandatory follow-up appointments after a termination procedure could prevent such life-altering complications and provide necessary psychological support.

According to the World Health Organization, complications from unsafe abortion procedures remain a significant health issue, with millions suffering from short-term and long-term health consequences. In the UK, where many opt for at-home medical terminations, ensuring comprehensive post-procedural care is crucial. It is estimated that more than 200,000 abortions take place annually, and the absence of mandatory follow-ups could potentially put thousands at unnecessary risk.

Therefore, I urge the UK's Department of Health and Social Care to prioritize women's health by implementing a policy that makes follow-up appointments mandatory after all termination procedures. Regular medical consultations post-abortion could detect complications early, offer psychological support, and significantly improve recovery outcomes.

This change is not just about policy; it is about safeguarding women's health, dignity, and well-being. Let us ensure that no other individual has to endure the physical and emotional hardships that I did due to a lack of essential follow-up care.

Join me in advocating for mandatory post-abortion follow-up care by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals undergoing this significant medical procedure. Your support can lead to a change that saves lives and promotes better health outcomes for women everywhere.
