The Issue

Portsmouth is a vibrant city, full of life and diverse communities. As a dedicated professional working with individuals who have learning disabilities, I've seen firsthand the incredible impact that communication tools like Makaton can have on enhancing lives. Makaton is a unique language program that uses symbols, signs, and speech to enable people to communicate, especially those who struggle with traditional verbal communication.

Currently, many residents and visitors of Portsmouth face barriers due to a lack of accessible communication methods. This limitation isn't just frustrating; it's isolating. It prevents individuals with communication difficulties from accessing essential services, participating in community events, and engaging fully with the society around them. We can, and we must, do better in supporting these individuals and fostering a more inclusive environment.

Makaton-friendly environments are proven to significantly enhance the quality of life for those with communication challenges. By integrating Makaton into public services, businesses, and recreational areas, Portsmouth can become a model of inclusivity. This means training staff in Makaton, making visual aids more available, and embedding Makaton signage in public spaces.

Cities across the UK, like Bristol, have successfully launched campaigns to become Makaton-friendly, with immediate positive outcomes. They witnessed increased engagement from the community and a sense of belonging among those previously feeling excluded. Portsmouth has the potential to lead by example, proving that our city can be welcoming and accessible to all.

By signing this petition, you're placing a vote of confidence in a more inclusive, respectful, and equal community. Join me in urging the Portsmouth City Council to take decisive action and implement Makaton-friendly policies throughout our city. Let's make Portsmouth a leader in communication accessibility and ensure everyone, regardless of their challenges, feels at home here. Please sign the petition and help turn this vision into reality.
