As an elder citizen who wasn't informed about the potential loss of my future winter fuel allowance during election campaigns, I am moved to initiate this needed change. We must hold political parties more accountable for their promises. In our democratic society, political parties use attractive manifestos to gain public support during elections. However, once the ballot boxes close, many fail to deliver on these promises without facing legal consequences. For meaningful democracy to continue to exist, this must change.

Evidence from numerous elections proves this ongoing issue. For example, the Institute for Government's analysis has shown that only around 40% of a sample of 2017 manifesto commitments were implemented by the end of the parliamentary term.

The solution to restore public faith in the democratic process is to make party manifestos legally binding. Violations of the commitments or failure to declare intentions should be punishable by law. It will be a significant step toward a more transparent, accountable, and representative democracy for all citizens.

Let's put a stop to unkept promises and enact a law that holds our political leaders to account for their words. This is our democracy; they are our elected representatives.
