The Issue

Menstruating is a natural, unavoidable part of life for half of the population. Yet, despite its inevitability, access to period products remains a privilege rather than a right in the United Kingdom. This should not be the case. Menstruation is not a disorder, and those who menstruate should not be treated as if it were a preventable condition that they need to manage alone.

Imagine being caught off guard by your period while at school, university, work, or simply out in public, and not having the means to manage it adequately. It's a scenario many of us have faced, yet it doesn’t have to be this way. Access to period products in public spaces is vital for ensuring the dignity, comfort, and health of all who menstruate.

Statistics from Plan International UK reveal that 1 in 10 young girls can’t afford menstrual products, and 14% have had to borrow supplies from friends due to lack of affordability. Our present system leaves many vulnerable, particularly young people and those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, who shouldn't have to skip school or feel ashamed just because they don’t have access to essential hygiene products.

We can make a change. Scotland has already taken the lead by implementing groundbreaking laws to make period products free and accessible in public places, setting a powerful example. The rest of the UK should follow suit. By installing vending machines or offering free period products in schools, universities, public restrooms, and workplaces, we not only promote equality but also empower people to manage their periods without stigma or fear.

This isn't just about convenience; it's about equality and the recognition of basic human rights. Providing free and accessible period products is a step forward in respecting bodily autonomy and ensuring that everyone has what they need to participate fully in society.

Join me in urging the UK government to implement policies to provide free period products in public spaces. Sign this petition and help make menstrual health a priority for all.
