Make Penfield Road Safer for our Families (Brighton, NY)

Make Penfield Road Safer for our Families (Brighton, NY)
The Issue
We, the residents and neighbors of Brighton, NY, are asking Monroe County to reconsider a crosswalk and other safety improvements at the intersection of Penfield Road and Colonial Village Drive, at the corner of the area’s only local business, Tree Town Cafe.
This is a crossing used daily by families, children going to school, older adults, and people visiting the café and nearby homes. Right now, crossing this road feels extremely unsafe. Drivers fail to yield, traffic moves very quickly, and there is no reliable, protected way for pedestrians to cross.
What we’re seeing
While past reviews have pointed to lower pedestrian counts at very limited time windows, that does not reflect how this road is actually used throughout the day. People cross here regularly at all hours, and safety concerns remain consistent.
What we are asking for
We respectfully ask Monroe County to:
Install a crosswalk with a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) at this intersection
Consider additional improvements such as:
Reduced speed limit in this area
Better signage and visibility
Improved lighting and crosswalk markings
Why this matters:
This is about making sure everyone in our neighborhood (especially kids and older adults) can cross the street safely and confidently.
Our ask:
We’re asking Monroe County to work with residents and take a fresh look at this intersection with safety and not just traffic counts in mind.
