Safe Streets, Safe Schools: One-Way Streets & Speed Bumps Needed!

Safe Streets, Safe Schools: One-Way Streets & Speed Bumps Needed!
The Issue
As a concerned resident of Richmond Hill, NY 11418, I am deeply troubled by the dangerous conditions that our children face on a daily basis while walking to and from school. The narrow 86th Avenue from 101nd Street to 115th Street and 85th Avenue from 101nd Street to 110th Street have become hazardous zones due to speeding drivers and frequent accidents.
My personal story is just one among many in our community. I have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of reckless driving in our school zone. Many families, including mine, have suffered property damages due to speeding vehicles. Moreover, the narrow avenues force residents to park partially on sidewalks, creating an additional risk of injury for our children and damage to private property.
The situation is dire as this area is home to five public and private schools with over 2,368 K-8th graders who are exposed daily to these unsafe conditions. We cannot afford any more accidents or injuries caused by negligent drivers.
To address this urgent issue, we call upon the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) to take immediate action:
1. Convert both narrow avenues into one-way streets: By implementing one-way traffic flow on both sides of these streets, we can significantly reduce congestion and improve safety for pedestrians.
2. Install speed bumps along all streets between Jamaica Avenue and Myrtle Avenue from 101nd Street to 115th Street: Speed bumps are proven effective in slowing down vehicles within residential areas. They will serve as a deterrent for speeding drivers while ensuring the safety of our children.
We believe that these measures will create safer road conditions within our school zone by reducing vehicle speeds and minimizing the risk of accidents. This petition aims not only at protecting our children but also at promoting responsible driving behavior among all motorists passing through this area.
We urge the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) to prioritize the safety of our community by implementing these changes as soon as possible. Together, we can create a secure environment for our children to thrive and grow without fear.
