Make NYC a Cleaner Place for All of Us
The Issue
It's time New Yorkers make a stand against litter. Pollution is on the rise. According to AP News, New York City produces over 44 million pounds of trash every single day. A lot of this waste ends up on the street because of garbage bags bursting and poorly designed trash cans. Additionally, in neighborhoods with lower-income families, trash cans are more scarce, leading to an increase in litter. These flaws are polluting our home—from Staten Island to Manhattan. My proposition would mandate the New York Sanitation Department to implement SmartPack Automatic Trash Compactors and have one of these specialized compactors every block, making cleanliness the standard for all New Yorkers.
Proposition 1: Implementing SmartPack Automatic Trash Compactors.
Even when people do their duty, throwing trash into trashcans the garbage often gets blown out. What's more, these trashcans are two small. I’ve witnessed it with my own eyes—overstuffed trashcans with waste littered all around. The city should implement SmartPack Automatic Trash Compactors. Often found at Chick-Fil-A, they open automatically and compress trash, leading there to be more space. Furthermore, they are closed on the top, meaning trash wouldn't be able to escape. The company offers a solar powered model, leading to less CO-2 emissions and less litter. According to Ecube Labs, this trashcan can “hold up to 5 times more waste compared to non-compacting bins, reducing collection frequency by up to 80%.” Not only would it prevent pollution, it would reduce work for Sanction department workers.

Often times in lower-income neighborhoods, trash cans are more scarce. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene showed a map that demonstrated this; the Upper East Side has an average of 456.9 enclosed trash cans per square mile, while East Harlem has only 52.3 per square mile. This has to stop! Litter attracts pest like roaches and rats, which spread disease. No matter your socioeconomic status, your ethnic background, or your religion, clean streets should be the standard! By signing this petition, you make it so clean streets is the standard for New Yorkers.
