Make N12 Safer

Make N12 Safer
The Issue
Petition for Improved Safety on N12 Highway in South Africa
To: Minister of Transport, Premier of Gauteng Province, South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC)
CC: South African Road Federation (SARF), Arrive Alive, Road Safety South Africa, World Health Organization (WHO), Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), SAPs, JMPD
We, the concerned citizens of South Africa, urge you to take immediate action to address the escalating safety concerns on the N12 highway.
The Problem
The N12 highway has become a hotspot for violent crimes, including rock throwing, damaging of vehicles, and loss of lives. This has created a climate of fear among road users, compromising their safety and well-being.
Affected Communities
Drivers from Lenasia, Eldorado Park, Soweto, Orange Farm, Ennerdale, and surrounding areas are particularly vulnerable to these safety risks, as they frequently use the N12 highway for daily commutes.
Fears and Concerns
We, the commuters, live in fear of:
- Being attacked or injured while driving on the N12 highway
- Having our vehicles damaged or stolen
- Losing loved ones due to senseless violence
- Being traumatized by the constant threat of crime
Current Efforts
While we acknowledge the efforts of private companies and organizations in providing additional security measures, we believe that these initiatives are insufficient to address the scale and complexity of the problem.
Funding and Resources
The funds and resources allocated to address the safety concerns on the N12 highway are inadequate. We urge the government to provide sufficient funding and resources to support:
- Increased policing and surveillance
- Improved road infrastructure and maintenance
- Community-based initiatives to address the root causes of crime
Our Demands
1. Increase visible policing and surveillance on the N12 highway.
2. Implement effective measures to prevent rock throwing and other forms of violence.
3. Provide adequate lighting and maintenance to ensure the road is safe for use.
4. Collaborate with local communities and stakeholders to address the root causes of these crimes.
We Call Upon You
To treat this matter with the urgency it deserves and take concrete steps to ensure the safety of all road users on the N12 highway.
Signed
