Yesterday, FATRAC met with Gold Fields District staff to discuss implementation of the Browns Ravine change in use project. It's difficult to understand the magnitude of the process, all the boxes that have to get checked, all the stakeholders that have to be met with, but we're happy to see that District Superintendent Barry Smith is making it happen.
Some of the topics that were discussed were the reroute at Peanut Point (where we hope they will include our input), trail etiquette after implementation, and how to monitor issues on the trail.
Even though the district has a full time trail crew that is helping make the necessary trail modifications to implement the CIU, Smith stated it was important to include volunteer groups to help with trail maintenance to give a sense of ownership of the trails. This is something FATRAC specializes in coordinating and is looking forward to opportunities to organize our volunteers. It was mentioned that another parks staff person would need to be hired to coordinate the volunteer work but we hope that won’t be necessary.
This is the first CIU in the State Parks System since Bills Trail in 2013. Other State Parks have their eye on how things go here as they look to start their own CIU process. Lets all cross our fingers that nothing gets in the way.
Thank you all for your support of FATRAC and our efforts to improve the opportunities for Mountain Biking in the Sacramento region.
