Make more St. John’s College restrooms gender-neutral.
St. John’s College is the Social Work building at Memorial University. Social work students are petitioning for more restrooms to be gender-neutral. Access to restrooms is a basic need for everyone. For transgender, non-binary and other gender non-conforming people, using gendered restrooms is a source of added stress and anxiety in an already stressful university setting. Having a single-stall gender-neutral restroom is a great start, but students and staff should not have to go to the first floor of the building to access a gender-neutral restroom. People should not have to choose between an education and going to the restroom by having to go downstairs either by stairs or elevator. That extra time is taking away from the learning experiences we are paying for. We are asking for all but at least one restroom, specifically on the second floor of the college, to be relabeled as gender-neutral to fit in with the inclusivity standard that social work practice is based on. Going to a restroom on a different floor is inaccessible and ableist. Gender is non-binary, and people should feel free to use any restroom without subjecting themselves to westernized gender normalities. Gender diversity is welcomed, and restrooms should not cause fear among individuals. Gender segregated restrooms are an outdated practice in 2022 and should be gender non-conforming. Please sign this petition to show support and solidarity in making the restrooms in St. John’s College accessible to all.
