Make Mondays half days at Bergen County Academies

Make Mondays half days at Bergen County Academies
The Issue
I, like many other students at Bergen County Academies (BCA) in Hackensack, NJ, dread Mondays. The long school day that stretches until 4:10 PM often leaves us feeling exhausted, drained, and overwhelmed. Transitioning to a new week can be challenging, and the current Monday schedule only adds to our stress. This is why I am calling for a change: to make all Mondays at Bergen County Academies half days.
Having a shorter school day on Mondays could significantly improve students' well-being and morale. Research has shown that increased rest and reduced stress levels can lead to better academic performance and enhanced mental health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sufficient rest is crucial for developing teenagers, and chronic fatigue can negatively impact learning and memory.
This change isn't just about providing relief; it's about creating a more productive and positive learning environment. With a 12:30 PM dismissal on Mondays, students would have more time to relax, pursue extracurricular activities, and spend quality time with their families. This schedule adjustment could also reduce burnout and increase engagement in classroom activities throughout the rest of the week.
Furthermore, many high-performing educational institutions have already adopted similar practices, recognizing the importance of balancing academic rigor with the well-being of students. By joining this movement, we can ensure that Bergen County Academies continues to be a leader in innovative educational practices.
I urge the administration at Bergen County Academies to consider the positive impacts this change could bring to our student body. Together, we can create a nurturing school environment that prioritizes both academic excellence and student happiness. Please sign this petition to show your support for half-day Mondays at Bergen County Academies.
