Make Mombasa a Walkable, Cyclable, & Sustainable City

Make Mombasa a Walkable, Cyclable, & Sustainable City
The Issue
The residents of Mombasa County and the Members of the Mombasa Walk Movement support a Walkable, Cyclable Sustainable City of Mombasa. This is in line with the Mombasa County government’s mandate to make Mombasa city more liveable and accessible, resulting in increased economic activity. By promoting the use of non-motorized transport modes such as walkways and bicycle ways infrastructure, Mombasa will have an increased number of people walking and cycling. The net effect will be to effectively reduce fuel consumption for motor vehicles, the cost of commuting and moving around in the city and enhance the physical and mental well-being of the residents. This will also contribute to reducing pollution by greenhouse gases from road transport to have a city better for residents and visitors.
We, therefore, call on Mombasa County to:
- to invest in connected walkable pathways, cycling ways, and other infrastructure that will make Mombasa County a more welcoming place for pedestrians. We urge the government to prioritize the safety of pedestrians more than anything else and to take action to make Mombasa County a truly walkable city.
- to make every third Saturday of the month a car-free day in selected areas of the CBD and to implement necessary policies to ensure the initiative is successful, to encourage more walking and promote a healthier lifestyle among the citizens of Mombasa.
- to prioritize preventative medicine and health education in its budget and policymaking.
