The Issue

I've had my period at school so many times, and it's always the same story: empty dispensers. It's honestly frustrating and a little embarrassing, to say the least. It’s even worse because we have this rule where we can't leave the classroom during the first 15 minutes of class or the last 15 minutes before class ends.

Imagine sitting through a class, feeling anxious about a stain appearing on your pants, just because you couldn't access basic menstrual products when needed. I know I'm not alone in this. Menstruating isn’t something we can control or choose when it happens. Yet, many students at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School find themselves in this uncomfortable predicament.

Providing free and accessible menstrual products in schools isn't just a convenience—it's a necessity. Organizations like the American Medical Women's Association and Planned Parenthood stress the importance of access to menstrual hygiene products for health and wellness, pointing out that it directly impacts students' productivity and confidence.

Furthermore, according to a study published by the Journal of Adolescent Health, students experiencing "period poverty" are more likely to miss school than their peers, which can affect their educational outcomes in the long run. We need to ensure every student can attend classes comfortably and with dignity.

To remedy this, we propose that Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School makes menstrual products freely available in all restrooms, ensuring they are stocked consistently so no student has to stress about missing necessary products when they need them the most. Simple measures like having a dedicated member of staff for re-stocking or even installing automated refill systems could make a huge difference.

The state of California has already taken significant steps toward menstrual equity by enforcing laws that provide free menstrual products in low-income schools. Let's be proactive and ensure our school leads by example, promoting an environment where students can focus on learning and personal growth instead of worrying about accessing basic hygiene products.

Sign this petition to support free and accessible menstrual products at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School. Let's make a pledge to promote dignity and equality for all students.
