Make medicinal cannabis available on the NHS for ADHD treatment
The Issue
I am a parent deeply committed to the well-being of my son who struggles with ADHD. Despite our best efforts to navigate traditional medication routes, we have found limited success, and often, the side effects cause more harm than good. My son's story is just one among countless others in the UK who could benefit from an alternative, yet effective treatment—medicinal cannabis.
ADHD is a condition that affects approximately 1.5 million people in the UK, encompassing children and adults. According to the NHS, common treatment methods include behavioral therapy and stimulant medications such as methylphenidate or amphetamines. However, these aren't one-size-fits-all solutions. Medical studies have suggested that cannabinoids can help reduce hyperactivity and improve focus in patients diagnosed with ADHD, providing a viable alternative for those unresponsive to or intolerant of conventional drugs.
Although medicinal cannabis has been approved for use in conditions like epilepsy and multiple sclerosis, ADHD patients are still denied access through the NHS. This is despite the growing body of research and anecdotal evidence that supports its efficacy. Countries such as Canada, states in the US, and Israel have recognized its potential and made medicinal cannabis available for ADHD and other neurological disorders.
The lack of access to medicinal cannabis not only limits the treatment options for my son but thousands of others who endure daily struggles. By making medicinal cannabis available on the NHS, we can provide a safe, effective, and less harmful alternative to standard ADHD medications.
We urge the Secretary of Health and the NHS to conduct comprehensive research into medicinal cannabis as a viable treatment option for ADHD and approve its use based on scientific evidence. The lives of many could be significantly improved with this progressive step towards patient-centric care.
