Make MCPS Campuses Safer with Metal Detectors in Middle & High Schools

Make MCPS Campuses Safer with Metal Detectors in Middle & High Schools
The Issue
MCPS in MCPS
Make Campuses Predominantly Safe in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS in MCPS) is a group of concerned parents, formed in February 2025, that believes that our district must do more to protect students against the real threat of weapons on school campuses.
Specifically, we are petitioning the district to incorporate weapons abatement systems in every middle and high school. According to Wikipedia, we have the 14th largest public school system in the United States measured by student enrollment. Over the past decade and a half, the 10 largest school districts have placed metal detectors in their high schools (and some middle schools). The 11th largest school system – Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia – is currently reviewing its safety measures after repeated calls by stakeholders to add metal detectors. Montgomery County should follow suit and assess the need for weapons abatement.
We understand that this is not an ultimate solution but still an important step in making campuses safer.
We call on Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor to implement the placing of weapons abatement screening machines in the 29 high schools and 40 middle schools in the district. By signing this petition, I join MCPS in MCPS in urging school leaders to help secure campuses and protect students, faculty, and staff.
