Every year, ducks and other wildlife travel between Manvers Lake and the surrounding estates, often having no choice but to cross the busy Manvers Way. Local residents regularly stop traffic to help ducks and their ducklings cross safely because we know what can happen if we don’t.

Sadly, this evening, a mother duck was struck and killed while trying to cross the road. When we returned in an attempt to rescue and guide her ducklings to safety, they too had been run over. They were clearly visible at the side of the road, yet vehicle after vehicle continued without stopping.

This wasn’t just heartbreaking, it was preventable.

Manvers Lake forms part of the Dearne Valley wetland network, an area recognised for its importance to wildlife. The wetlands support a wide variety of birds, including ducks, geese, swans, herons, kingfishers and even nationally significant species such as bitterns and spoonbills at nearby reserves. These interconnected lakes provide vital habitat for breeding, feeding and migrating birds. 

The loss of even common waterfowl affects the local ecosystem. Beyond the environmental impact, incidents like this are upsetting for the many families who walk around Manvers Lake. Children should not have to witness animals being killed on a road that cuts through an important wildlife area.

We are calling on Rotherham Council and the relevant highways authorities to act before more wildlife is needlessly killed.

We ask for:

Permanent wildlife warning signs on Manvers Way.
A reduced speed limit where wildlife frequently crosses.
Seasonal warning signs during duckling and nesting season.
Investigation into wildlife crossing measures, fencing or safe crossing points where appropriate.
Collaboration with local wildlife organisations to identify long-term solutions.
Protecting wildlife doesn’t just benefit animals, it creates a safer environment for everyone using the area. Slower traffic reduces the risk of collisions and gives drivers more time to react when wildlife is present.

This tragedy should be the last of its kind.
