TO: Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, District 6 Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte, and the North Hempstead Town Board

We, the undersigned residents and supporters of Port Washington, call upon our local government to commission a professional traffic study addressing large tractor-trailer traffic on Main Street and the surrounding local roads.

For years, residents have watched large tractor-trailers travel along Main Street, struggle to navigate the turn at Shore Road, rumble through the busy area near the train station, and pass through intersections where their size and weight make stopping and turning difficult.

Main Street is the heart of Port Washington. It is traveled every day by pedestrians, commuters, cyclists, families, local shoppers, and motorists. Large trucks passing through this congested area raise serious concerns about public safety, traffic flow, noise, and wear on local roads and infrastructure.

Longtime residents may remember the prominent “Truck Route” sign near the post office that directed commercial trucks to continue straight on Port Washington Boulevard. A potential alternative would have large through-trucks continue north on Port Washington Boulevard, turn left onto Harbor Road, and then turn right onto Shore Road, avoiding the most congested portion of Main Street.

A professional traffic study should:

Document the number, size, and travel patterns of large trucks using Main Street
Evaluate the risks to pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and nearby property
Assess the effects of heavy truck traffic on local roads, intersections, and infrastructure
Determine whether Harbor Road or another route provides a safer alternative
Recommend appropriate truck-route signs, traffic regulations, and enforcement measures
Account for necessary local deliveries while addressing avoidable through-truck traffic
We are not asking local officials to act without evidence. We are asking them to gather the evidence needed to make a responsible decision—and to act on the study’s findings.

Waiting until someone is seriously injured is not an acceptable traffic-safety policy. This issue deserves attention now, before a preventable accident occurs.
