As a lifelong protector, foster, and advocate for animal rights, it breaks my heart to see the reality of animal rescue in Louisiana. Our state, which unfortunately operates as a kill state, witnesses countless animals being euthanized because of irresponsible situations beyond their control.

Although we have good-hearted citizens, willing and ready to offer these animals loving homes, we lack the necessary education, funding, and resources to support them. As a result, innocent lives are lost, and potential pet families are left desolate.

Louisiana euthanizes 77% of cats and 56% of dogs that enter its shelters, and we rank as the state with the highest kill rate nationwide according to the Best Friends Animal Society's 2020 report. We require immediate change, starting by rectifying our practices and becoming a no-kill shelter state. This shift not only saves lives but also promotes an atmosphere of love, respect, and responsibility for living beings among our community members.

I implore our government officials and fellow citizens to take this issue seriously. Let us work together to transform Louisiana into a safe haven for animals in need, providing them with a chance for a better life.
