Make Kalydeco Available to Australians with Cystic Fibrosis

Over 200 Australians will die prematurely if life-saving treatment, Kalydeco, is not listed on the PBS. Currently 50% of people with Cystic Fibrosis die before the age of 30. Every day that we wait, irreversible lung damage is occurring. Our lives are at risk without Kalydeco.

We need Vertex Pharmaceuticals and the Australian Government to make Kalydeco available to Australians with Cystic Fibrosis:

1. We need Vertex Pharmaceuticals and the Australian Government to agree to a compromise on the price of Kalydeco.

2. We need the Australian Government to fast track the post PBAC processes to ensure the fastest possible access to Kalydeco.

What is Kalydeco?

Kalydeco is the first medication that fixes the underlying CF defect, essentially turning off 'CF.' Kalydeco represents a major breakthrough in CF research; current medications only treat the symptoms. Kalydeco adds 18 years to our life expectancy; the less damage we have when we start Kalydeco, the more years we can add to our lives (Scottish Medicines Consortium).

Why is Kalydeco not available yet?

Kalydeco has been recommended for PBS listing (Nov 2013), however the PBAC and Vertex are still negotiating the price. Kalydeco currently costs over $300,000 a year. Kalydeco is already available in the US, UK and many European countries; approx 90% of eligible patients in the world outside Australia have access to Kalydeco. We are amongst the last in the world to get access to this life-saving medication.
