I believe that June 28th should be made a federal holiday referred to as LGBTQ+ Liberation Day. This is an important day for the LGBTQ+ community because it marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising as well as the first pride parade ever to be held a year later in 1970. Both of these events mark a pivotal point in the history of LGBTQ+ people in America. We decided that we also had a claim to the American dream and we should be allowed to live out that dream in a manner which could be likened to other citizens of this country. 

     We live in a day and age where anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is being proposed and signed at a rate which could have detrimental effects on both the morale, as well as the legal standing of our community; over 300 such bills have been introduced in the past year across the country. The LGBTQ+ community, as well as America at large, needs to have a specific day to reflect on the history of LGBTQ+ resistance in The United States. The significance of June 28th makes it a worthy extension of the already existing LGBTQ Pride Month.

     A federal holiday dedicated to marking the beginnings of modern LGBTQ+ resistance could be invaluable in instilling in future generations of LGBTQ+ Americans a sense of pride and power. It would also push the dial forward on creating a more generally inclusive mindset in those outside of the community.
