The Issue

The University of Arizona is the number one school for space science research.

The University receives more NASA grants annually than the next nine top NASA-JPL funded universities combined, and is #1 among all universities in space science research and development expenditures.

Far too often, I've spoken to people with no clue that we've so much involvement with this country's space program! That is why, when Jared Isaacman visited campus on 9/23/2026, I asked how many signatures I'd need for him to be our Commencement speaker for the 2026-2027 Academic Year.

Understandably, he said that it is up to whether the university is willing to invite him. I therefore want to gather everyone at the university, to whom our accomplishments mean anything, to show that we care and that we want Jared Isaacman as our speaker!

Pragmatics for Administration to Consider

  • When I finished my undergraduate degree last school year, my commencement speaker was booed off stage. I believe that hearing out the student body on this, in practical terms, can serve to smooth things over between the administration and student body.
  • During the recent visit, students from Tucson-area high schools, the U of A, Pima Community College and Tohono O'odham Community College were able to engage directly with Isaacman. Speaking to others after the fact, I'm able to clearly see that the Inspiration tour lives up to its name. I'm confident that hearing our request can surely boost enrollment in the upcoming years.
  • I remind that The University of Arizona is the top recipient of NASA-JPL funds without contest. Since NASA is such an important source of grants and contracts, it is of great importance to maintain a strong relationship with the agency. What better way is there than to ask for this?
