The Issue

I was bitten by a Bully dog who was tied to a sofa in a hot room. This incident left me not only with physical scars but also with a deep concern for the well-being of large dogs who are often misunderstood and mistreated due to a lack of owner education. Large dogs require responsible ownership and understanding to ensure both their safety and the safety of those around them.

In many communities, there is a growing number of large dog breeds known for their strength and energy. These breeds, such as Bullys, German Shepherds, and Rottweilers, are often stigmatised due to incidents that could have been prevented with proper care and training. Sometimes the issue isn't with the dogs themselves but rather with the lack of knowledge and preparedness among their owners.

To ensure the proper treatment and understanding of these magnificent animals, we must make it mandatory for all potential large dog owners to enroll in a specialised training course. This course would cover essential topics such as dog behavior, proper housing, socialisation, nutrition, and how to respond to specific needs these breeds have.

Some European countries have already introduced compulsory training or ownership education requirements for new dog owners, notably Spain, parts of Germany, and historically Switzerland. Germany has stricter behavioural testing and obedience training for owners of designated "category" or dangerous breeds.

Implementing a course  will not only improve the welfare of the dogs but also enhance community safety, reduce the number of large dogs being abandoned or surrendered, and help diminish the unfair stigma these breeds often face. Such a programme will ensure that potential owners fully comprehend the responsibility they are taking on and are equipped with the necessary skills to care for their companions.

We urge lawmakers and animal welfare organisations to support this initiative and make it a legal requirement for potential large dog owners. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the safety and well-being of both canine companions and our communities. Let's work together to create a safer and more informed environment for all.
