Make it law: every job advert must "say the pay"

The Issue

NOVEMBER 2026 UPDATE: The Prime Minister has said a new law will make salaries compulsory in job adverts, and he's telling businesses to start now.

That's real progress. But there's no date for the law yet, and no detail on how it will work. Until it's passed, and passed properly, this petition stays open.

I've worked in communications for almost 20 years. Eighteen months ago, I found myself back on the job market, sending out application after application.

The adverts all asked for the same things. Lead this. Build this. Manage this. But when I finally got to the salary conversations, many were offering half of what someone with my experience would expect. That amounted to hours spent tailoring CVs and cover letters for roles that were never going to work.

I'm not alone. 94% of people who responded to the government's consultation backed salary transparency. Now it needs to become law, and the law needs teeth.

That's why I'm calling on the government to bring in the law quickly, and make sure it:

  • applies to every employer
  • requires a real salary or a realistic range, not "£20,000 to £120,000"
  • gives job seekers a way to report employers who ignore it

Business groups are already arguing this should be left to employers. The more of us who sign and share, the harder it is to water down.

Please sign and share.
