As a dedicated worker in petcare for over a decade, I have seen too many instances where goldfish, won as prizes at local fairs, end up loved but improperly cared for. The joy of a moment leads to a lifetime of compromising an animal's health and wellbeing. Goldfish, contrary to popular belief, are not supposed to have a short life span. In fact, with proper care, they can live equivalent to koi, boasting a long life of 10 to 15 years.

A typical goldfish bowl is no home for these aquatic beings. It lacks the required space for them to move freely and develop fully. They deserve much bigger, properly filtered tanks for a healthy existence. With this petition, I hope to inform others about the needs of these creatures and make them aware of the commitments and responsibilities that come with pet ownership.

Moreover, the practice of giving goldfish as prizes perpetuates the harmful assumption that animals can be objectified as "things" for our amusement. It undermines the commitment, knowledge, and responsibility required to tend to a life.

Therefore, I urge lawmakers to consider making it illegal to hand out goldfish, or any animals, as casual prizes at fairs or similar events. Let's respect all creatures' rights and teach our children about the responsibility and respect that owning and treating an animal requires.
