Joanne Smith started this petition to Alison McGovern MP and

Make it compulsory to wear a bicycle helmet and provide them free of charge to low income families.

Cycling is becoming an increasingly popular activity on our roads.  It's a convenient and affordable form of transport aswell as giving us huge health benefits.

Unfortunately, cycling doesn't come without risk.  In 2016, 102 cyclists were killed on UK roads, 3397 were seriously injured and 14,978 slightly injured.  Although Cyclists suffer a number of different types of injury in an accident, head injury has been identified as the main cause of death or serious life changing trauma.

One way in which cyclists can prevent or reduce the extent of a head injury is to wear a helmet.

Unfortunately, it is not compulsory in the Uk to wear a helmet. I hope to help change this.

As a Mum of two children aged 12 and 10 who both ride bicycles, this is very close to my heart.  The amount of children I see cycling with no helmets is astounding.

I have spoken to some of my children's friends and the reason why they don't wear one is because they don't like them or they get laughed at.  If it was compulsory then it would just be the norm and accepted by all.

I believe we all have a responsibility to educate and encourage our children to wear helmets. Myself and my husband lead by example and both wear one.

Police statistics collected and published by the Department for Transport tell us that 99 Cyclists died on Britains roads in 2018, 3707 were seriously injured.

According to the bike helmet safety institute, 57% of bicycle related fatalities could be prevented by using a protective helmet.

Please support me and sign this petition to protect our children and each other.

Thanks
