The Issue

I will never forget the day I found my beloved cat, lifeless on the side of the road. It was devastating, but I considered myself fortunate to have found him at all. Many pet owners are not so lucky. Across our communities, people are constantly posting about missing cats, and, tragically, many end up being hit by vehicles and left for dead. Even worse, these poor animals are sometimes dumped in skips or left in bags at rubbish sites.

Cats are more than just pets. They are family members who deserve to be treated with the same care and respect as dogs, especially in unfortunate accidents. Currently, if a dog is hit by a vehicle, there are legal obligations to report the incident. However, this is not the case for cats, and it is heartbreaking to know that they can be harmed without any legal requirement to report the incident.

It's time to change this and ensure that our cats receive the same legal protections. We demand a new legal requirement that mandates reporting when a cat is hit by a vehicle. This would align the treatment of such incidents with the existing legal framework for dogs, recognizing the importance of notifying owners and allowing for proper handling of the affected animals.

This policy change could prevent countless families from enduring the heartache of never knowing what happened to their beloved pet. It would encourage responsible driving and humane treatment of all animals. Protect our feline family members and help bring closure to grieving pet owners.

Join me in making our voices heard to urge lawmakers to take action. Sign this petition to demand that the same legal obligations for reporting vehicle accidents involving dogs are extended to cats. Together, we can create a safer and more compassionate environment for these precious members of our families.
