Our world changed forever when our beloved cat was hit by a car and left injured at the roadside, eventually dying alone. He was not just any cat; he was 95% a house cat, our "fast food kitten" who adored McDonald's meals and rarely ventured far from home. To make the pain even worse, he was found somewhere unfamiliar, far from the places he knew. The devastation this caused to our family, particularly to our three special educational needs (SEND) boys, is impossible to put into words.

This tragic event prompts us to urge a crucial change in legislation: making it mandatory to report when a cat is hit by a vehicle. In the UK, dogs hit by cars must be reported, but no such rule exists for cats. Had someone reported the incident when our cat was struck, or had there been a legal requirement to check on injured animals, he might have received treatment in time to save his life.

Cats are not just pets; they are family. They bring immense joy and emotional support to many households, much like dogs. Our story is not unique. Countless families have suffered the same heartache, unsure if their beloved pets could have been saved. Why should cats, who often share a special bond with their owners, be treated any differently?

We propose a straightforward yet impactful solution: introduce legal requirements for reporting incidents involving cats. Similar to current traffic laws concerning dogs, this could involve motorists notifying the authorities or local veterinary services when they hit a cat, allowing injured animals a chance to be treated and their owners the chance to be informed swiftly.

This legislative change will not only safeguard the wellbeing of countless cats but also bring peace of mind to families like ours. It acknowledges the value of all animals and provides humane treatment in line with their role in our families and communities.

We appeal to the Government to consider this humane amendment seriously. Members of Parliament with cats understand how deeply they become members of our families. Let us ensure that injured cats are not left to suffer alone, giving them a fighting chance and providing closure for those who love them.
