This is only mid-May and this week our lovely vets told us they are already having to reluctantly put down dogs due to heatstroke, simply due to their owners' irresponsible behaviour, ignorance or selfishness. I myself have witnessed too many people forcing their dogs to remain on hot beaches with no shade whatsoever, or on hot pavements with no consideration for the long-term damage caused to their fragile bodies, including burnt paws and heat distress, often resulting in euthanasia. It is time to speak out and protect our gentle companions by making it a criminal offense to walk dogs in high heat between 10am and 4pm. In an ideal world, there would be vet or vet nurse volunteers in public spaces and beaches to educate the public, but until this happens, dogs need our help.
