During this covid pandemic it is not only humans who are suffering but also animals especially stray animals.
All educational institutions have been shut down in India. Delhi has been in lockdown for almost a month now.
The stray dogs living in campuses are starving as both teachers and students are not going to the college. And the feeding is generally done on a voluntary basis in most of the campuses. There are no guidelines regarding the management of stray dogs in the campuses and due to absence of this the authorities and the management hardly consider dogs as their responsibility. Hence, feeding during lockdown of these voiceless and helpless creatures has become a big challenge.
Motilal Nehru College which is a constituent college of University of Delhi is an exception. Their Enactus students have been running DESI (Duty to Empathize, Sterilize and Immunize) club for the stray dogs. Theirs is probably the first college in the whole of India whose students took up the responsibility of feeding, sterilizing and taking care of their campus dogs since 2014. And they have been doing it in the most systematic and sustainable manner. Once the third year students pass out from the college the first and second year students take their place. Today with the help of PFA (People for Animals) they are helping other colleges too to take care of their campus dogs.
Lakshita (M+918800117248) president of Enactus, Motilal Nehru College shared the plight of stray dogs living in Shriram College of Commerce. This is what she told
"The dogs in the SRCC campus were not being fed and eventually got malnourished. Achal Gupta reached out to PFA for help and PFA to us regarding the same. One of our team members was ready to go and feed the dogs at SRCC, and Chanchal reached out to us and was keen to help the dogs too.
Both Eshita and Chanchal are visiting the SRCC campus alternatively to feed the dogs. Food for the dogs is being sponsored by Achal Gupta"
SRCC (Sriram College of Commerce), University of Delhi is one of the most reputed colleges of India but unfortunately like most of the colleges of India this college too has turned a blind eye to its campus dogs which are around fourteen of them. Achal Gupta is an animal lover and an advocate who came to know that the college dogs are unfed. Eshita is a student of Motilal Nehru College and Chanchal is a graduate of some other college of Delhi University yet these three good souls are helping the dogs of SRCC to survive. While Achal is providing food for the dogs, Eshita and Chanchal.are physically going to the college and feeding the dogs (pic in the post).
Lakshita also shared another story of another Delhi University College. This is the story of dogs and the caregivers of Jesus and Mary College:
"A mother dog gave birth to six puppies Daisy Ma'am, a teacher at JMC and two more people Khushboo and Rachel started to feed the dogs. We joined them to get the puppies adopted and the dogs sterilised so that everyone lives in harmony and peacefully. One of the puppies got adopted today"
Indian colleges need teachers like Daisy. Jesus and Mary College and it's management should be proud of such teachers and also its students Khushboo and Rachel. Khushboo and Rachel are a pass out of JMC
If Daisy and her students were not there then probably the ten dogs living in the campus would have died by now. Well as far as adoption of puppies is concerned. Out of six one has been adopted but five are still left. Let's hope they too get homes
In India college management often try to throw the dogs out of campus Not because they are inhuman or cruel but just for the simple reason that they do not think that the dogs living in the campus are their responsibility. They are completely ignorant about the ABC program and more than that about dog laws and dog behaviour.
Majority of the Vice Chancellors, principals, teachers and management of educational institutions do not consider stray dogs living in the campus as their responsibilty. They mostly think that dogs are a nuisance and hence should be driven outside the campus. They are neither aware about the ABC program nor about dog laws which clearly says that relocation of dogs is an offence.
It's time the Animal Welfare Board of India came out with a guideline for dog management in educational institution.
Our honourable Prime Minister has spoken about Atmanirbhar Bharat (self reliant India). Let's hope this is not only confined to business and manufacturing sector of India. India should be seif reliant on all the sectors.
If every educational institution takes up the responsibility of feeding and sterilizing their campus dogs then this will definitely help in making India Atmanirbhar.
Just imagine if all the campuses throw the dogs out of their campuses?
Who will feed them? Who will sterilize them? Who will take care of their medical problems?
Will that not add to.the burden of the govt???
Then how will that help in making India Atmanirbhar????
