Growing up, ice skating was a cherished winter activity for my friends and me. However, the joy of gliding over the ice often felt out of reach due to the cost of renting skates and signing up for free skate sessions. I vividly remember the disappointment of my friends who couldn't join because they simply couldn't afford the extra expenses. Before my mother received a raise, I too found myself on the outside looking in, longing to join the rest of the skaters.

Ice skating should be a joy everyone can experience, regardless of their financial situation. Ice rinks across the country already offer free skate sessions as a gesture of community goodwill, but the additional costs still create barriers for many. By making skate rentals and sign-up fees free, we can ensure everyone has an opportunity to participate in this healthy, fun, and communal activity.

The skating centers have an opportunity to lead inclusivity in their communities by reducing these financial barriers. Imagine bustling skating rinks filled with people from all walks of life, forming friendships and creating lifelong memories. I propose that skating centers partner with local businesses and community organizations to subsidize the cost of rental skates and cover sign-up fees. They could also consider getting a sponsor and hosting community events to raise the necessary funds.

Several municipalities across the country, such as in Minneapolis and Grand Rapids, have initiated programs similar to this with great success, demonstrating that with community support and creative funding solutions, it is entirely feasible.

Now is the time to act and make ice skating accessible for everyone. By coming together, we can create a lasting change that will enrich our communities. Please join me in calling for all skating centers to eliminate rental and sign-up fees, and let's make skating a sport for everyone.
