Petition: Transform Holy Cross College, Ryde into a Coeducational School
As parents and active members of Sydney’s north-west suburbs, we believe it’s time for a progressive change in the Catholic education system at Holy Cross College, Ryde. In today’s world, many schools are moving towards coeducation, a model that numerous studies show fosters academic growth and enhances social development, preparing students for the diverse realities of higher education and the workforce.
For families with daughters attending local Catholic primary schools such as St Therese, St Michael's, Holy Spirit, St Charles, and St Kevin's, the options for a Catholic high school education are severely limited. Currently, the only available option for girls in the Catholic system is Woolwich, a girls' school. However, the commute to Woolwich can take up to 1 hour and 20 minutes, creating significant logistical challenges for many families. This long travel time places a burden on students and parents alike, making it an impractical option for many in our community.
Additionally, parents seeking a Catholic coeducational experience for their children are often left with few choices. They may feel forced to send their children to public schools, which lack the religious foundation that is important to many families. Others may turn to the private school system, which may not be financially or practically feasible.
We believe that converting Holy Cross College into a coeducational institution would provide a solution that reflects the needs of today’s families. This change would give families access to a local, Catholic coeducational option, ensuring that all students—both boys and girls—can experience a balanced, faith-based education without the need for long commutes. It would also align with modern educational practices, which emphasize the benefits of coeducation in fostering well-rounded students.
We call on the relevant authorities to consider this necessary step forward and act to transform Holy Cross College into a coeducational school. This change will benefit our children, better reflect the values of modern education, and support the long-term growth of our community.
Please sign this petition to support making Holy Cross College, Ryde a coeducational institution, providing a more accessible and balanced Catholic education for all.
