Healthcare in Australia faces significant challenges, with long waiting times for public doctors and expensive private medical services. It's time for changes to create a more accessible and equitable healthcare system for all Australians. For those relying on public healthcare, prolonged queues and lack of services result in delayed medical attention, which can exacerbate health issues. According to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), the median wait time for elective surgery in public hospitals was 39 days in 2020-21, with some patients waiting even longer. This can have serious consequences for individuals needing timely care. On the other hand, opting for private healthcare is not affordable for the average Australian. Data from a 2019 Finder survey indicate that 53% of Australians find private health insurance premiums to be a financial burden, while 22% have delayed or avoided treatment due to costs. Moreover, prescription medications are a significant financial strain; the Consumer Health Forum of Australia reported that in 2020, nearly one in ten Australians skipped medication or consultations due to cost. The current system needs urgent reform. We propose: 1. Implement initiatives to reduce waiting times in public healthcare by increasing funding and resources. 2. Encourage competitive pricing among private healthcare providers, offering tax incentives for reductions in costs. 3. Expand the range of bulk-billed services to include more specialties and increase the Medicare rebate for bulk-billed visits to encourage more doctors to offer such services. 4. Implement regulations to control the pricing of essential medications, ensuring they are affordable for everyone. For the health and well-being of everyone, it's crucial that these changes are made. We urge policymakers to address these concerns and take steps towards a fairer healthcare system in Australia.
