Hawes Lane unites to maximise pedestrian safety (HUMPS)

Day in and day out, local residents and road users see that speeding on Hawes Lane and its use as a rat run have noticeably increased.

This worsened immediately after Bromley Council removed speed humps, without introducing any replacement traffic calming measures.

The cost saving of £12,000 is minor when assessed over the many years of a speed hump’s typical lifespan — especially given the increased danger to school pupils, parents, and other pedestrians.

Most residents who completed the official Council survey wanted to keep the speed humps, however imperfect they were.

The argument by local councillors — that increased parking from Leisure Centre users would help slow traffic — has been undermined by the ongoing delay in the Centre’s reopening, now not expected until 2028. 

We urge the local councillors to reinstate the speed humps or introduce a 20mph limit - at least during school hours -  and in either case, to signpost the school entrance clearly and install vehicle-activated speed signs.
