The memorial for Andrew in Griffith Park continues to grow, with friends and supporters leaving mementos, their Finisher Medal from Sunday’s Finish The Ride Griffith Park and planting flowers on the hillside. Thank you for this.

Myself and a team of other street safety advocates have been talking to several elected and city officials over the last few weeks since Andrew Jelmert’s passing, hearing concerns and expressing solutions to bring about change in making Griffith Park safer.

However, currently proposed short term plans will not even begin to take effect till at least 2 months from now with medium and long term solutions not planned for many months to many years from now.

This is unacceptable.

There needs to be more pressure brought to bear on these officials so they know that the park needs to come back to the community NOW.

There are short term ideas which do not require a lot of research, engineering or approvals that can be implemented right away while longer term handlings are put in place, there just needs to be the will to get it done and do it.

This Friday from 2 - 3pm, several community members and I will be meeting over Zoom to work out the next steps to take in Griffith Park. Everyone is welcome to join us. We need as many volunteers as possible to spread the word and effect change. If you are interested, please email me at  DamianKevitt@StreetsAreForEveryone.org and I’ll send you the Zoom link.

Also let me know in the comments below any thoughts or ideas you have.

Los Angeles has a pedestrian fatality rate that is four times the national average. There are so few areas of Los Angeles that are safe for pedestrians and cyclists. Cars should be able to easily access all the activities of Griffith Park not speed through it. Hikers, runners, families, and cyclists should be able to enjoy the trails of Griffith Park without fear of getting hit.

Please continue to sign and share this petition to return Griffith Park to the community and phase out the use of Griffith Park as a high-speed highway. #ToNotThroughGriffithPark, #GriffithParkfortheCommunity #GriffithPark.

Best, Damian Kevitt
