Make Girls Flag Football an Official School Sport in Central Bucks School District
The Issue
For the past three years, our girls and many others have participated in playing girls flag football, and it has been a great experience! They absolutely love it! In fact, the number of girls playing flag football has risen significantly over the past three years in Bucks County through PennAthleticsClub.org. In 2000, there were 80 girls playing. That increased to 225 in 2021. Now in 2022, that number is now over 400 girls!
Nationally, high schools are now offering the opportunity to play Girls Flag Football as an official sport. Even universities are now starting to offer scholarships for Girls Flag Football.
Here are some more reasons why CBSD should consider launching flag football for girls as a school sport:
- Nationwide, flag football has been quietly building up the sport for years. NFL Flag has been around since 1994 and is the nation's largest flag football league, with over 1,600 teams and 500,000 athletes. As of 2018, more kids were playing flag than tackle.
- College scholarships are now available for women’s flag football. Last year, 10 NJCAA and 15 NAIA schools committed to offering women’s flag football scholarships and stipends.
- Money is available for our schools. Last year, the NFL partnered with Nike to incentivize states by offering up to $100,000 in products to support official girls' high school flag football
We have countless girls with exceptional talent in our area. Flag Football is another way in empowering young girls and women, giving them the opportunity to dominate on the field just like any other sport. Please support our effort to help make Girls Flag Football an official school sport within Central Bucks School District. Let’s lead the way together so other area school districts will follow!
