Make GCSE Literature an Optional Subject

The Issue

Working in a high school, I've witnessed firsthand the immense amount of valuable school time wasted on compulsory English Literature. For many students, this subject neither proves beneficial nor accessible. Instead of engaging with the material, students who find little interest in literature, or simply do not require it for their future endeavors, find themselves disenchanted. The curriculum contains texts that students perceive as outdated, making the entire process more of a chore than a learning experience.

Each year, I see bright, promising students who are genuinely interested in various fields such as science, technology, and art, being bogged down by literature they cannot relate to. The current system forces every student to plod through novels and poems that, instead of igniting a love for reading, often extinguish it permanently due to the overwhelming analytical approach demanded by the exams.

Globally, education systems are moving towards personalization and flexibility, recognizing that each student has unique strengths and interests. It is time our education system evolved similarly by making GCSE Literature an optional subject. This would allow students to choose based on their passions and career aspirations, relieving those who feel constrained by the current mandatory status.

Offering Literature as an optional subject would not only respect students' diversities but also enhance their educational experience by allowing them to focus on subjects that truly matter to them. It's a move towards a system that prioritizes individual student needs over blanket mandates.

With education being a crucial foundation for future success, making English Literature optional would reflect a necessary adaptation to modern educational demands. Join us in advocating for a change that respects and recognizes students' individuality and diverse career paths. Sign this petition to support making GCSE Literature an optional subject, allowing students the freedom to choose more relevant and inspiring educational journeys.
