Prom is known traditionally only to be for seniors and juniors to have as a formal event, with underclassmen able to go if they come with a date that is an upperclassman. As Prom is usually a black-tie event with floor-length gowns/tuxedos, having all underclassmen be able to attend ruins the idea of this. Many won’t care and will wear short dresses and casual clothing. It will just be like another Homecoming or Winter Formal, taking away from how special Prom is for upperclassmen. Prom would be overcrowded and unenjoyable. It is meant to be a more mature social activity for students in their final year(s) of high school, a night to remember. Having underclassmen there would spoil the event as it would become less special and underappreciated by all classes. Underclassmen will have their time to go to Prom. We are finally back to a sense of normalcy after coming back in-person and now things such as Prom are being changed in ways that we students don't want. Many of FVHS's upperclassmen students are angry, mad, and frustrated at the idea of having such an important night be filled and overcrowded with freshmen and sophomores. It's important for upperclassmen to be able to attend an event to celebrate their final year(s) before graduating and celebrate finishing AP exams amongst each other. We want to be heard by our FVHS school board and ASB and hope that this petition will convince them differently.
