The Issue

American Idol gets 17 million votes in one evening and we can't get 1000 to help abused animals??  Disgraceful.

“The Story of Lazarus... The last few days, we have been trying to process the cruelty that was inflicted upon Lazarus. The veterinarian believes he is only about 8 months old, but his fragile body tells the story of unimaginable cruelty. Lazarus has been starved nearly to death. There is no muscle left on his body. No fat. Nothing.

He cannot stand. He is so weak that he cannot move his body; only his eyes move, and they look at us as if he is silently begging for help.

This poor soul suffered immensely due to months of unrelenting neglect, excruciating pain, and unimaginable cruelty. What the doctors found when they examined him was even more horrifying.

There was blood and maggots coming from his anus, a sign of severe infection and prolonged neglect. His entire body is covered in painful pressure sores, likely from being forced to lie in his own urine for extended periods of time without being able to move.

His gums are pale white, showing just how critical his condition is, and his bloodwork has already revealed sepsis spreading through his body.

Dr. Walker said Lazarus’ condition is comparable to Junie, one of the most severe starvation cases we have ever seen.

Just as he began his fight in the hospital, Lazarus was dealt another blow—testing positive for leptospirosis. Already battling insurmountable odds, this diagnosis compounded his challenges. However, despite everything, the dedicated veterinary team refused to abandon him, fighting valiantly for his recovery.” This heart-wrenching story is not isolated.

neighbors had been hearing it for days... the sound of a dog being beaten. Not once. Not accidental. Repeatedly. They called and tried to report it but no one came. Until one neighbor couldn’t take it anymore and stepped in. What he found was exactly what we feared. A baby, only a few months old, unable to walk. Broken bones. Open wounds. Terrified of even the gentlest touch. We took Loki in immediately. X-rays confirmed a fractured leg from abuse. Right now, our focus is Loki. He needs urgent medical care and surgery to repair his leg. We can’t undo what was done to him.

This neighbor did what they could  and because of that, Loki is alive. That matters. The bigger issue? Even when abuse is caught on camera or proven, accountability is inconsistent. There is no incentive for abusers to stop. No fear of getting caught. The punishment does NOT fit the crime. But something can be done about that.

Regrettably, as for Lazarus as thousands others it’s too late. Please help us save Loki.  Please help the innocent animals and shield them from the lethal abuse they will become victims of if something isn’t done.

Every year, countless animals endure similar fates at the hands of those who lack compassion and humanity. Our existing legal framework is insufficient in deterring such heinous acts against innocent beings. We urgently need to make a change to protect these vulnerable creatures. This petition calls for the enactment of a federal law empowering judges to impose "Eye for an Eye" (E4E) sentences for those convicted of animal abuse. It's time for our justice system to reflect the seriousness of these crimes by providing a punishment that fits the gravity of the offense. While this approach may seem drastic, current methods have proven ineffective in deterring abusers, and a more impactful solution is needed. Empirical evidence supports the assertion that tougher sentencing can drive behavioral change. According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, jurisdictions with stringent animal protection laws report fewer incidences of abuse. As advocates for animal welfare, we believe E4E sentencing could serve as both a deterrent and a means of accountability. It's imperative that we rally together to urge our lawmakers to take definitive action. By supporting this petition, you stand with Lazarus and countless voiceless victims in demanding justice and protection. Sign this petition to help bring about a tangible, effective change in how our legal system addresses animal cruelty. Together, we can set a precedent that values and safeguards the lives of animals.       PHOTOS & STORIES COURTESY OF NYC SECOND CHANCE RESCUE
