The Issue

At present if you hold an tenancy be that Private rented sector or Social Housing a landlord can serve a Section 21 Notice should he choose to ask for the property back. This is a common practice in the current climate for private sector landlords

The petition is to ask for suppport for a law to be introduced to protect tenants that reside in properties which suffer from mental health or disabilities as set out in Equality Act 2010, from eviction, by the landlord, should tenants keep pets as Emotional Support Animals for the purposes of therapy and wellbeing. Currently there is no legal registration system in this country for Emotional Support Animals

If there is nothing in the law that prevents landlords from evicition of tenants  that do have pets as emotional support animals who provide therapy and wellbeing, there will be no protection from the eviction ending with person, losing the animal(s) they rely on so vitally for therapy, wellbieing and company it would then impact on the individuals health causing anxiety, suffering by being  vulnerability In some cases pets such as these may be a protection factor that keep depression and suicide at bay.

More and more people are taking on pets, they did more so during the covid period due to lonliness and isolation,we have more of the older generation amnd more people with mental health issues and disabilities that not only keep animals for pets but as Emotional Support Animals. The threat of eviction from landlords in the private rented sector is even more prevalent with the Bank of England interest rates rising and landlords looking for a way out ofincreasing  mortgages who wish to cut thier lossses by the eviction tenants who may have animals for emotional support in some cases.
