Make education more affordable for students
The Issue
As an undergraduate senior high school student in the Philippines, I know firsthand the struggles and barriers we face in pursuing higher education. The excitement of approaching college graduation is often overshadowed by the looming fear of financial constraints. Despite the importance of higher education, the public college options available to us are limited, and the costs associated with private institutions are staggeringly high.
The dream of obtaining a quality education should not be exclusive but rather an accessible opportunity for every Filipino student. Education forms the cornerstone of our future, and by making it more affordable, we can unlock the potential within each young individual, enabling them to contribute positively to our society.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, only 30% of eligible high school students progress to higher education. This striking number reflects the systemic financial barriers that hinder so many talented minds from achieving their academic aspirations. The financial burden includes not only tuition fees but also textbooks, transportation, and daily living expenses, which all add up to make higher education out of reach for many.
To address this urgent issue, I urge the government to increase funding for public colleges and universities, providing scholarships and grants specifically aimed at low-income families. Additionally, there should be initiatives to establish more public institutions across the country, ensuring that education is accessible to all regions, including the underdeveloped provinces. By investing in our education system, we pave the way for a more skilled and competitive workforce, which will ultimately benefit our country’s economy.
Education is a right, not a privilege. Let us come together to demand change and push for policies that will make education truly affordable and accessible to everyone. Sign this petition to join me in advocating for affordable education, so that every student has the opportunity to succeed and fulfill their dreams.
