Our community is facing a serious safety hazard that has already resulted in a traumatic accident. My son Ryley was on a friends bike near our home in Dun Eimear when he became curious by foxes in the back field. In a moment of innocent distraction, the bike went from under him he fell against the metal fencing that surrounds our estate and suffered a severe injury - a jagged, 12 cm wound on his arm that will leave him scarred for life. As parents, hearing your child scream in pain is one of the most terrifying experiences, and no child should endure such agony simply because of inadequate safety measures.

The metal fencing around Dun Eimear estate is outdated, hazardous, and blatantly neglectful of the safety needs of children. The fencing is riddled with holes and is dangerously sharp. It’s a magor danger that poses a risk of serious injury or worse. My son's accident could have been even more catastrophic if the cut had hit a major artery. We need immediate action to prevent any more incidents like this.

We are calling on the local council and relevant authorities to replace this dangerous fencing with one that is designed to provide a safe environment for everyone, especially our children, who play outside every day. There are safer, child-friendly alternatives available, such as a cavity block wall with pillars and cappings or concrete posts and wooden fencing would even be safer and could protect our children from harm.

Dun Eimear should be a place where our children can play freely. Please sign this petition to demand prompt action to ensure that our estate invests in safe surroundings.
