Make Domestic Voilence related course part of compulsory school education
The Issue
Every four days in the UK a woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner
Those who have experienced domestic abuse are 3 times more likely commit suicide or self harm.
Over 56% of young people have seen online bullying,
Over 20% of young have experienced online bullying.
Over 46% of girls 16 and under are emotionally abused by a boyfriend.
Kids as young as 12 watch online porn.
Only 30% of those subjected to rape or sexual assault fight back or attempt to run away. That means 70% freeze, don't mean they wanted it to happen. They freeze.
These are shocking figures and these are facts. Yet there is nothing done to educate proactively.
Kids are getting into relationship younger than they were. Most kids in high schools have "boy/girl friends"
We need teach kids on types of abuse, long term effects, the trauma and years it takes to recover.
Course such as "own my life course", "Domestic abuse awareness course" will educate that some bruises are visible, some are not. Some vanish with time some never do.
Case studies such as In Control-dangerous relationship and how they end in murder, by Jane Monkton-Smith should be available free to all doctors, judges, social services and teachers.
These books and domestic awareness course is made part of school curriculum too.
Younger the boys and girls, that are aware what good relationship should be like the lesser the chance of murders, suicide and mental health issues. It's no brainier.
I read a Facebook post few months, a teenager young boy slapped a girl out of blue in school, in an attempt to calm the girl teacher (female teacher) said that boys sometimes do these things if they like the girl.
Isn't it infuriating to hear this in 21st century?!!
So this just proves the lack of education, knowing what is acceptable and not acceptable, It's not automatic to a gender or sex. Some things are common sense to some but have to be taught to others.
Dont blame the teacher, but blame her lack of education in the subject.
Again this is example of something that left a visible bruise on the teenager, there are many young teens carrying invisible bruises.
The list below is some of the examples issues teenagers face now as young as 12.
Look a certain way, look good but not too good
Pick up your boyfriend /girlfriends call, msg straightaway regardless of the time or situation.
Talk dirty in front of friends, participate in derogatory behaviour in public.
Smoke, vape, consume alcohol, drugs, cannabis.
Sending nudes, circulating edited derogatory pictures among friends after break up.
Thanks to new technology and social media channels that didn't exit couple of decades ago, the abuse is gone tenfold and starting with younger teens.
I know many teens who have tried suicide partly because of this. TEENS!!
These are not peer pressures, these are the buds of coercive controllers that we allow to flourish under the name of "peer pressure".
How many kids do you know you have tried attempts on their life? I bet everyone of us knows atleast one child who attempted suicide. How many of them were from "online bullying", "ex-situation" or "friends issues"?!!
They have whole life in front of them and they are already suffering and damaged.
And we are supposed to sit and hope they learn from experience to choose wisely "next time"?!!!!
What if there is no next time?!!!
It's time for change.
Before kids are taught that "W" goes in "V", they should be taught "respect", "boundaries", "rights" and "responsibilities". Let them know what true love should be like.
Let's make this place livable for all.
Been watching a clip on tiktok where the groom turned up for his own wedding with no vows written down and laughing about it while declaring he would abuse his would be bride if she don't listen!!
Another clip that you see a adult man asking his girlfriend in genuine sincerity "when was the last time she cooked him dinner"?!!!!
The million number of men who ask young mums, what do you do all day sitting doing nothing?!!
Is this the standard we want to set for healthy relationship in today's age?
Its time we teach them what abuse is, what love is, so atleast no one has excuse to abuse.
Problem is that the abuse doesn't stop with the abusers. It continues through the system. Example of that young girl who was slapped, having to hear the teacher say that boys do that sometimes, can you imagine the rage she must have felt?, the disappointment. It is nothing short of further emotional abuse by the teacher.
Abuser is not just one person but the whole of system. Police fail, Dr fail, social services fail.
The professionals that are supposed to safeguard should be aware of abuse, effects the after effects and don't abuse the victim further.
In every session one attends on women's abuse the eco of being abused further by the system is so loud that I am surprised that system is not crumbled yet.
It's shocking how Family courts, judges further abuse the victims. They desperately need training. In matter of abuse and effect of their emotional health.
But I believe in education and I know if not all, but most problems in the world can be solved with education.
Don't wait for it to happen to you or your loved one. Sign the petition to get kids educated on domestic abuse. Make Domestic abuse part of school curriculum.
Teach children, what is healthy relationship what is not. It is more important than knowing different "God's/religion" in the world or e=mc^2
Urging as a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend... a human.
