Dogs are not just pets, they are members of our families. Yet, the law does not reflect this sentiment when it comes to dognapping. Currently, stealing a dog is often treated as a minor crime with minimal penalties. This needs to change. In the United States alone, it's estimated that nearly two million pets are stolen each year (National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy). Despite these staggering numbers, many perpetrators face no real consequences for their actions.

Dognapping should be classified as a felony offense akin to kidnapping because of the emotional distress it causes families and the potential harm it inflicts on dogs. By making this change in legislation, we can ensure that those who commit such acts face suitable punishment and deter potential offenders.

We call upon lawmakers to recognize the severity of dognapping and amend existing laws accordingly. It's time we give our four-legged family members the protection they deserve under law.
