I was out for a peaceful walk with my leashed dog when  German Shepard, got out of his yard and came right for us. In an attempt to protect my pet, I held onto my dog, sustaining harm to my arm in the process. Despite my best efforts, the dog targeted us until my canine companion was brutally killed.

Dog-on-dog attacks like this should be illegal. This isn't an isolated incident: according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, there are an estimated 4.5 million dog bites each year in the U.S, and a significant proportion of these, some studies suggest up to 76%, involve dogs attacking other dogs (AVMA, 2019).

We need stricter laws to prevent dogs from wandering outside their yards unsupervised and to hold dog owners accountable for any harm their pet might cause to others, be they humans or other pets. This would help prevent tragic incidents like mine from happening in the future.
